Our Programs

Literacy & Essential Skills

Beyond reading, writing and numeracy, today’s world demands a set of complex life skills to allow people to successfully participate in their communities.  These include digital skills, communication and social competence, identity and cultural appreciation, as well as many others.  In alignment with our approach rooted in action-learning, we provide different settings and opportunities for people to build confidence, relationships, as well as skill-building. These include:

  • Drop-in support for form filling, resumes and interview skills, digital support etc.

  • Partnering with Seniors Digital Literacy events

  • Partnering with other literacy programs on events and community services

  • Hosting pop-up learning events

Community Capacity Building

A core part of our work focuses on working with and supporting other organizations to enhance the overall capacity of our sector to contribute to community well-being.Storytellers’ Society build capacity in the community by partnering with existing organizations, or hosting learning opportunities, and participating in community networks and committees:

  • Participate in community health and wellness committee

  • Host learning opportunities

  • Maintain a community directory of supports, services and programs for community use

  • Provide governance and management coaching and training to volunteer and non-profit organizations

Food Security & Sovereignty

Patti Digh is quoted as saying “the shortest distance between two people is a story” which is why our ways of working and being together are rooted in creating the opportunity to connect through our individual and collective stories.  We also believe that the second shortest distance is through food.  Nourishing our bodies - as well as our souls - together creates wellbeing, community, and relationship.  Thus most of our programs and activities will include food - even if they are not centered on food.  It also means we engage in food security and sovereignty work in a way that is about building relationships and maintaining the dignity of all. We contribute to and lead a variety of food security efforts in the community:

  • Maintain and promote the use of a community food infrastructure like fridge and pantry

  • Co-host food-literacy events like- Seedy Saturday, Canny Grannies, and Apple Pressing events

  • Deliver the BC Farmers Market Coupon Program annually

  • Participate in regional and national networks like the Community Food Centres, BC Indigenous Food Security Network & others.

  • Offer food processing equipment like dehydrators and a freeze dryer for community use
